Fear and Self-Preservation
Note: This topic was mentioned during the call but not discussed in depth.
Multiple participants raised how fear and the instinct for self-preservation limit curiosity.
The Internet Is Forever
Scott Moehring suggested:
"@Jerry - possibly afraid of saying anything that isn't quite figured out or 'right' because the internet is forever. Exploring ideas out loud can be punished."
Modern concern: Permanent record of imperfect thoughts creates:
- Fear of being wrong publicly
- Reluctance to think out loud
- Avoidance of exploratory questions
- Self-censorship
Unpredictable Anger
"Maybe we want to leave less of a trace in the world, because its memory is long and its anger unpredictable?"
The risk: Any statement might trigger:
- Being canceled
- Being trolled
- Attacks
- Permanent reputation damage
Identity and Self-Image
Jerry connected fear to identity:
"There's a piece of what I think you're raising, Alex, which is about our identity and our self-image. And the preservation of self."
When curiosity might challenge:
- Who we think we are
- Our group belonging
- Core beliefs
- Status
...we avoid it to preserve psychological safety.
Avoiding Pain
"We avoid pain more than seek pleasure."
If curiosity risks:
- Social rejection
- Cognitive dissonance
- Uncomfortable truths
- Loss of certainty
...we'll choose incuriosity.
Safe to Explore
Eve Blossom's Somatic Experiencing perspective:
"Somatic experiencing can deepen curiosity by helping the body feel safe to explore rather than be passive, be reactive."
Curiosity requires bodily safety. When in fight/flight/freeze:
- Curiosity shuts down
- Survival takes over
- Exploration becomes impossible
Connection to Belief Systems
Alex Kladitis's point about Belief Systems and Curiosity:
"We don't want to challenge our mental model and belief system."
Challenging beliefs feels like self-destruction when identity is tied to them.
The Paradox
We need curiosity to adapt and grow, but fear prevents it when we most need it:
- In polarized times, fear blocks curiosity about "the other side"
- In uncertain times, fear blocks curiosity about difficult truths
- In changing times, fear blocks curiosity about new possibilities
